Cosmic Crisp: A New Apple Variety That Lasts a Year in the Refrigerator
A new apple variety, developed over 20 years and said to maintain its freshness for up to a year without rotting in the refrigerator, has been released in the U.S. This special apple, named Cosmic Crisp, was created by crossbreeding the Honeycrisp and Enterprise varieties.
The first trials of this hybrid apple were conducted at Washington State University in 1997. So far, 10 million dollars have been invested to bring this apple to market. The fruit is described as juicy, crisp, and firm in texture. One of the leaders of the apple's creation process, Kate Evans, says, "This apple is very crisp, somewhat firm, with a good balance of sweetness and tartness, and is quite juicy."
Evans emphasizes that the apple's skin takes a long time to darken, and it can stay fresh in the refrigerator for 10 to 12 months. To date, 12 million Cosmic Crisp trees have been planted. However, due to Washington State University's strict licensing policies, these apple trees can currently only be grown in the state of Washington.
Known by the code name WA38 during its creation process, this apple was named "Cosmic Crisp" because of the small white spots on its dark red skin, which resemble the sky. Washington is the leading state in the U.S. for apple production, and apples are the second most popular fruit in the country, after bananas.
